With a low profile in the U.S., it’s easy to think of Dunhill only for their cigarettes stateside, but not only does Alfred Dunhill, Ltd. offer sharply tailored suits, classic weekend sportswear, and fine leather goods, they are also renowned for their smoking accessories and writing instruments. Founded in London in 1893, Dunhill’s initial concern was “motorities”, items to accessorize one’s jaunts in recently popularized motorcars. In 1907, Alfred Dunhill turned his attention to the pleasures of smoking, opening a tobacco shop in the St. James’s district of London. Twenty years later, he invented the Unique, the first lighter that required the use of only one hand for ignition. In 1956, he designed the Rollagas butane lighter, a small, streamlined pocket lighter made famous through its appearance in the 1962 James Bond movie Dr. No. Today, both the Unique and the Rollagas inspire the contemporary line of Dunhill lighters. Available at Altai, Dunhill’s elegant lighters are decorated with understated motifs, designed to emphasize their materials and mechanics. Also on offer at Altai, Alfred Dunhill humidors are exquisitely crafted from beautiful wood with simple fittings, and the pens range from the functional to the elaborate. Often featuring a black lacquer body with contrasting metals, Dunhill writing instruments carry the “AD” mark and hint at Art Deco design references. Available with ballpoint, rollerball, and fountain tips, these special pens are meant to last a lifetime and beyond. Like everything from Dunhill, these fine items are true heirloom pieces.
